Invitation to Worship

Celebrate Black History
at Grace Markham!

Grace Church Markham has celebrated Black History since 2005!  The 2009 event occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2009.

In past years the Drummers and Dancers of the Barbados Overseas Community Youth Group (BOCC) have joined in the liturgy.  The drummers played their jembes and the dancers wore splendid gold costumes.  In 2009 Grace welcomed Zinette and Colette Leader performing on their steel pans!  The music included the Anthem Lift Every Voice and Sing, and hymns such as Soon and Very Soon, There is a Balm in Gilead, Siyahamba, and Down by the Riverside, and the lively Caribbean Praise Medley!  In past years the speakers were Archdeacon Peter Fenty, The Rev. Sonia Hinds, Deputy Chief Keith Forde, and the Rev. Dr. Markham of the British Methodist Episcopal Church.  In 2009 the speaker was the Rev. Donald Butler.

In 2012 we welcomed members of the West Humber Steel Pan Band under the direction of Joe Cullen to Grace for a day of celebration!

Every year the parish joins in celebration in the Black History service and in the annual Caribbean Dance in April!  After the worship is completed everyone gathers in the parish hall for a festive reception.  It is a lively and energetic celebration as we live and grow Grace fully!
